Since a week ago, none of my 2003 servers can get Windows Update to work -
they all sit at "checking for the latest updates for your computer...."

Is there anything I can check on this one?

Hi Sandy,

Now that Windows Update has changed to Microsoft Update (i.e. v6)
I am a little uncertain where issues are best handled
microsoft.public.windowsupdate
or
microsoft.public.server.update_services
The former is more likely, but the last does deal specifically with
the newer update engine, but in its corp internal WSUS form.

At any rate, you might try posting there. I suspect that your
firewall(s) are not allowing a return response to come in.
The actual downloads often originate from other than the website
IP with which the requests have been initiated.

Problem solved! I found that by enabling the Internet Explorer Enhanced
Security Configuration, Windows Update failed to run each time. I've
uninstalled it and voila! All my Updates are running great!
