Is this NECESSARY to install from the AV 2005 package?

If I understand your post correctly, you are asking about a NAV program
update. If this is correct, then this doesn't have anything to do with
Windows and you should direct your question to Symantec. If I have
misunderstood your question, please post back to this thread.

No, we're talking about the COMPONENT you download from LIVE UIPDATE on
Norton's AV 2005:

Norton AntiVirus 2005 Program Update (English)/583.3 KB

WHAT...I repeat...WHAT does this component do actually?
Is it necessary to HAVE IT installed or what?

All components of NAV and Live Update are part of Symantec's program and
not a Windows operating system component. Live Update only updates
Symantec products and is unrelated to Windows Update. Here is a link to
Symantec tech support:

Since I don't use any Symantec products on any of my Windows machines, I
can't answer your question. You should ask Symantec.
