Hi, I have seen this update at the Windows site for months. I have avoided
installing it because this is one of the ones that once it is installed, it
can not be removed. SInce that scared me in the past, I decided to ask you
people what you think. WHy would I need to install this optional software?
I have windows XP sp1 ( have not done sp2 yet)
DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtime
Download size: 308 KB , 2 minutes
DirectX 9.0c includes security and performance updates. Download now to get
the latest DirectX updates. After you install this item, you may have to
restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be
removed.
ALso, is sp3 out yet for installation. should I choose to skip installing
sp2, can I just go directly to sp3. Reason I havent done sp2 is becauase of
all the problems I read here on these NG's.

First of all, please remember that these newsgroups are for tech help.
So naturally you are going to read about people having problems. I've
installed SP2 on hundreds of machines and the only one I where I had a
problem where the client had a pirated version of XP and had used the
activation hack. With proper preparation, SP2 installation goes
smoothly.

As for DirectX, if you aren't playing any 3D games that need it, I
wouldn't worry about the update.

Adding on from Malke's usual good advice

I've been running DirectX 9.0c for some time with no problems. Its used by
games and some other "multimedia" type apps. If the only thing you ever use
your computer for is office type work, for example, you can probably avoid
this update quite cheerfully.

XP SP3 will not be with us for some time, if at all. I wouldn't count on
waiting for it as a reason to avoid considering SP2.

As for SP2 itself. The problems you read about in these newsgroups are real,
there is no avoiding that. However, millions of people own computers, and we
have not had "millions" of posts here, so you might consider that. Also
consider that this place is like a hospital for sick computers... if Aliens
landed in the gardens of your local hospital and walked into the emergency
room then most of the humans they'd see would be sick ones; should they
conclude that the natural state of human beings is suffering from an
illness?

I've had / seen very few problems with SP2, and damn near all the problems
i've seen have been where the computer concerned already had a problem, and
applying SP2 simply made the problem more obvious.
