How can I modify the contents of what my own port 113 Ident would say
for my USERID in non-stealth mode, assuming I do this in Windows?
Can I read my own port 113 without exposing it even temporarily on the
Internet? E.g., is there an offline loopback test of some kind?
I'm running Win98SE with ZoneAlarm free on a laptop I use for Internet
work. What software determines what info port 113 gives out, if it
discloses anything?
Thank you.

From what I know, Win9x/ME does DOES open TCP or UDP port 113. I'm sure that NT
doesn't
either. However, many Routers do have TCP port 113 open.
My Linksys BEFSR81 has a "Filter IDENT(port 113): " setting which I have enabled.

And if W98 doesn't, I assume no earlier MS OS does, either.
I tested by shutting down my firewall altogether, cold-rebooting, and
probing via www.GRC.com ShieldsUp all service ports (0-1056) and then
port 113 alone. GRC reported stealth for all. I'm using a public access
point for wireless but I'd be surprised if the service provider was
stealthing all of my ports 0-1056.
Still interested in loopbacks, if anyone knows any.

As with most IP services, simply connecting to 127.0.0.1 would be what
you look for - but that's assuming that you installed an IDENT-Service
in the first place, as there isn't one in Windows by default.
I don't even know if there's a version of IDENTD available for Windows
at all ;-)
