The general rule is SP support is for one year after release of
next SP, unless extended or unless terminated due to end of
support of the base product serviced, but MS reserves the
right to provide additional support beyond this on a case by
case basis solely at its disgression.
For XP Sp1 the present announced timeline is
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean9
that it will end Sept. 17, 2006 which you will notice is
increased beyond the one year minimum.
