If you were Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options Not exactly "all over the Web for anybody to read": only those having access
to Internet routers - like your Internet service provider - will be able to
intercept your messages using complicated and expensive process. An
intrusion is possible, but (statistically) the intruder will not read your
Hotmail.
The reason for the request to sign in with a different e-mail may be that
someone has used the same computer before you to read their Hotmail and they
didn't sign off completely. Are you using shared computer, or public one?
Having separate password for very private sites (like your bank),
semi-private (like Hotmail), and temporary accounts at various places is a
good idea indeed.
