I don't mean to appear too stalupid but what is a certificate, and how do I
use them?

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

Example:
A google search for..
what is a certificate
Returns:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=what+is+a+certificate

Which includes:
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/D/digital_certificate.html

However... A google search for...
stalupid
Only returns:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=stalupid
(The result is this posting in fact...)
