I beta tested OneCare. When it time-expired, I deleted it (I cannot purchase
the finished product because I live outside the US!). However, try as I have,
I cannot delete the backups. Since I want to free-up space on my external HD
and clear this data (from which I cannot now restore anyway) - how can I get
rid of it?

By deleting it you mean un-install it?

What does the Microsoft "Once Care" web site say about un-installing the
product?

Thanks for your comments. I posted here because I couldn't locate a One Care
forum.

My first 'deleted' should have read 'uninstalled'.

I'm delighted to say I found a link which suggested allowing file-sharing of
the backups. This then allowed the sharer to edit (and indeed delete!) the
offending backups.

Folders that contain the Backup set, that are on external hard disks, can
apparently only be viewed by user accounts with administrator permissions.
However, administrators do not have delete permissions. Those permissions
must be granted to the administrator account.

In XP Home Edition, you have to right click the One Care Backup folder on
the external drive, select properties, select the Sharing tab, check the box
that allows the folder to be shared and check the box that allows other users
to change your files. You can then delete the folder.

Amazing, huh?!
