I have a Windows 2003 server, and I configured Routing and Remote Access
(RRA) to get a look at what I could do with the "basic firewall" utility it
conains. To get RRA started, I needed to disable Windows Firewall -- that
was required by the system.
It turns out that RRA does not do much as a firewall, nothing that couldn't
be done with IPSec. It's just a basic packet filter. OK, fine, that is what
I wanted to find out. So then I wanted to shut down RRA, and get back
Windows Firewall. I deleted the RRA setup that I had created as a test. But
Windows Firewall wouldn't restart, complaining that one essential component
(IPNat.sys, or something close to that) was being used by something else.
OK, maybe RRA was still holding on to it. So I stopped the RRA service.
Windows Firewall still wouldn't restart. So I disabled the RRA service.
Windows Firewall still wouldn't restart.
OK, as a last resort, I figured maybe on a system restart, everything would
be clean, and I could have Windows Firewall back. But the machine did not
come back up at all. It's now dead. (And it's at a remote data center, and
getting it going again will cost me a couple of hundred dollars in remote
hands. Bummers.)
So my plea for help:
-- how can this machine be restarted? (most urgent)
-- once it's running again, is it possible to de-configure RRA and run
windows firewall again?
