Running Windows XP Home. Downloaded latest Updates on 4/11/06. Have noticed
that my Ad-Aware SE would stall just before completing and my Spy-Bot S&D
would not start up. In the Windows Security Center there were no "controls"
below the header: "Manage Security Settings" so I couldn't turn off Automatic
Updates. Restored computer to 4/10/06. Upon re-boot my McAfee Security Center
gave me a pop-up box advising that certain files were missing and Virus Scan
was disabled. Re-installed McAfee and ran Scan System which showed no virus'.
Went into Add/Delete Programs and deleted both Spy-Bot and Ad-Aware SE.
Re-downloaded Ad-Aware and ran total system scan and again it stalled before
completion.

How can I re-establish the "Manage Security Settings" controls? All my
original program discs were damaged in a flood, but my product is licensed.

If it's an OEM computer, you can call the manufacturer and request new
discs. If it's a retail version of Windows, you'll most likely have to
purchase a new copy, although you could try support.microsoft.com. And,
if you're under a Volume Licensing deal (which I doubt since it's XP
Home) you may be able to get another copy through that.

As for McAfee, they may have updated it at some point after 4/10, so
when you did the restore, it 'broke' the programs. Since, anything you
install after the restore point will no longer work.

To turn off Automatic Updating (which I don't recommend), Press your
Windows key and the Pause Key (or go into System in the Control Panel)
and click on the Automatic Updates tab.

I would check out Lavasoft and Safer-Networking.org for information
about how Ad-Aware and Spybot are dealing with the latest updates. It
could be something in how they interact with something that was patched.
In which case, it's up to them to fix it.

HTH.
Patrick.
