We have several Word files on a shared folder that 2 users have full
Write/Read access too, and about 12 others have simply Read access to the
file.

If a user that has Read access only opens the file to view it, and 1 of the
2 users that has Write Access opens up the same file, shouldn't they be able
to make changes and save them.

What is actually happening is that the user that has Read Access only is
opening the file, then the user that has Write/Read access opens the same
file, and it reports as "Read-Only" at the top of the title bar, hence the
user cannot make changes.

Is this by design, or is there some type of security setting we are missing.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

By the way, this is Windows 2000 Server, and MS Word 2003.

When the file is opened for read, a ~*.tmp is made by word and the file is
locked by the original person opening it.

Doesn't matter that user 1 cannot write to the given file because they only
have read/execute on the file - since they can save it anywhere else they
want once they have it open.

So - yes - it is by design of Microsoft Office - not Windows.
