While I was reading the user reviews for Cryptainer freeware folder
encryption, a few reviewers noted TrueCrypt freeware does the same folder
encryption as Cryptainer freeware but without the artificial 25 Mb size
limits (it can create a hidden "volume" within a FAT volume up to the size
of the available space on the disk partition):

Snapfiles has a slew of decent reviews for TrueCrypt freeware:

Home page:
http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads.php

This TrueCrypt freeware has WONDERFUL documentation (the 105-page user
guide is reasuring to me after the last suggested program I just tested
which said I had to be over 18 to agree to the double license agreements,
for example!).

TrueCrypt comes with source code and Linux binaries too:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/truecrypt/

And, TrueCrypt addons seems to make it work with USB sticks:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/tc-wrapper/

Interstingly, the Cryptainer LE file encryption only had 128 bit blowfish
encryption, but TrueCrypt has a dozen or more selectable encryptions (which
one should we use of the selections)?
AES, Blowfish, CAST5, Serpent, Triple DES, Twofish,
AES-Twofish, AES-Twofish-Serpent, Serpent-AES,
Serpent-Twofish-AES, Twofish-Serpent, etc.

Even something called the "Hash Algorithm" was specifiable:
RIPEMD-160, SHA-1, Whirlpool, etc.

The way I set it up for my quick test was to create a file and then format
that file as a 2 GB disk volume and then to have a hidden volume inside
that volume as recommended in the doc.

It's getting late so I'll go to sleep now.
Based on my "gut feeling", I'd say this TrueCrypt freeware is the one we
should FIRST put our collective energy into as the recommended freeware for
encrypting FOLDERS (obviously PGP would be the recommended freeware for
encrypting FILES).

Does anyone agree or disagree with my tentative supposition that TrueCrypt
is the most highly recommended freeware for Windows folder encryption?
