I just looked at the #4 folder-encryption-freeware suggestion of "Instant
LOCK: BeST FoLdeR LOCk Free Down 3.0.3".

Interestingly, the web page says:
"Starting in Safe Mode, Dos mode or booting from another operating
system, PC or system disk or deleting a folder or process will not
change this UNLIKE ALL OTHER FOLDER LOCK, GUARD, SHIELD programs."

Given that statement, does anyone know if the previously suggested
"Cryptainer LE" freeware suggestion fits that description?

That is, can "Cryptainer LE" Windows folder-encryption freeware be defeated
simply by booting in safe mode?

If so, then it looks like "Instant Lock" might be a better solution for
secure Windows folder encryption.

This program, in contrast to the freeware Cryptainer LE, only allows a
ten-character password (versus 100 characters in Cryptainer LE).

I started the instantlocklite program on Windows XP and gave it the
password and then hit "Add" to select a 2 GB folder to encrypt.

Immediately, that 2 GB folder disappeared from view in the Windows
explorer. It would only come back if I opened the folder from INSIDE of
instantlocklite.

So, upon first inspection, the use model for instantlocklite seems similar
to that of Cryptainer LE. However, Cryptainer LE freeware is limited to 25
MB while instantlocklite seems to handle at least 2 GB (I only tried one
folder so this is NOT an exhaustive test by any stretch of the
imagination).

However, Cryptainer LE seems to create a NEW virtual drive while
instantlocklite seems to accept an existing Windows folder as the encrypted
folder.

I leave it to others to tell us if either of these programs is actually
secure enough for general use or if they can be easily circumvented.
