Hello electric1958 !
Well , now I do not use Hotmail but when I used to , I had this problem some
times.
This might become because of the fact their servers are temporary overloaded
or because of your internet connection (e.g. slow connection)
You are not signed out as the message is telling you.
Microsoft products are the greatest I have ever seen (well ,most Microsoft
products) but you may want to create your own new account in Yahoo,Mail.ru or
Gmail which are also really great.
