Dear Richard,
The way it works is that Windows "downloads" the updates and schedule a
specified time for the patches to be installed, if you turn the computer off
before the scheduled time, the patches will be installed before shutting
down.
Let's say that Windows downloaded the updates at 2:00, and the installation
is scheduled to be at 3:00, you decided to turn the computer off at 2:30, so
Windows install the downloaded updates before the shut down.
