Word/Excel encryption (for "open" password) is relatively strong and based
on industry-standard MD5 and RC4 argorithms. The original password can
be recovered only with brute-force and dictionary attacks. They're
implemented
in many programs, e.g. "Advanced Office Password Recovery":

However, if password is long and well selected, it cannot be recovered in a
reasonable time. However, in Word/Excel 97/2000 (and XP/2003 with
default/compatible encryption), the 40-bit encryption keys are used (due
to U.S. export regulations). Such files can be decrypted with 100% guarantee
regardless the password length and complexity; it takes up to 2 weeks on a
single PC using another software:
