I have some wireless units but unfortunately the previous tech didnt tell me
what the IP addresses were for them. I believe there is a DOS command that
will let me trace the IP address through the MAC address of the unit. Can
anyone tell me what it is or know of any other way to find out the IP
address? I apologize if this is in the wrong group but it really didnt seem
to fit in any category.

There are network scanners that can do such including the free version of
Newt as shown in the link below. Often scanning the network for IP addresses
with something like Superscan4 will reveal them as they usually have ports
80/23 TCP open for management and nothing else unlike most other
mputers. --- Steve

ARP -a is the dos command that deals with MAC addresses, but it only helps
you if your computer 1) is on the same local subnet as the wireless router
and 2) has previously had a reason to communicate with the router and has
stored the MAC to IP address mapping in the local arp cache. I'm not aware
of any other utilities that come bundled with Windows that will do this, but
there are probably tools out there. You may also want to log into your
router or switch on that subnet if you have one, as these probably have
tools to report this information.

Most tools of this sort you'll want to run on the local subnet that has the
router, because if not, many tools will give you the MAC of the router
interface that leads to the wireless unit.

You could search freeware / shareware sites like www.tucows.com or
www.nonags.com or www.jumbo.com for "mac address" or "mac address resolve"
or something like that. You could also look here:

You generally need to query the router/switch for this info, otherwise you could
likely get the MAC address of some other device when you start querying for them
as they are broadcast subnet based only.

Jeff,

Any number of network scanning tools will scan a subnet as defined, and list
both the IP address and MAC address, of any network devices found. I use Angry
IP Scanner and SoftPerfect Network Scanner, both free, and both will do your
job. Both install without effort.
