With the advent of Google and Microsoft Desktop searches - which virtually
blur the line between web searching and desktop searching - I am wondering..

Is there any cause for security concerns? I understand that there is a
difference between local IP and external IP searches, but do these tools
present a potential problem for exposing internal network searches to the
public (either inherently through either tool, or through the next potential
microsoft virus?

More individuals are wanting to use these tools on our network - and I may
have unfounded fears... but I have seen how Google often exposes inadvertenly
configured FTP sites (where one can read documents that I'm sure are not
intended for public reading). Is there any discussion on security concerns,
best practice methods of handling Microsoft/MSN search Google desktop
search/sidebar on a network?

Good question. However, the bigger concern in my opinion is that that can be
used by internal users to index Mapped Network Drives and search content
easily. Better have good NTFS permissions.

The Microsoft Desktop Search should be controlable in its behaviour via a GPO
