I have a problem with my home PC that I am hoping you can help me out with.
I was trying to setup my home network on that PC. It is running Windows
2000. I went to "my network places", then got into the screen about setting
up your home or office network, then it asked me if this is a business
computer on a business network and I changed it to NO. (This computer is
from my old company and was on a network. We never knew the administrator
password either) So I changed it to a home workgroup. And named it the
default of "WORKGROUP". Then finished the wizard, it asked me to reboot. I
did and then tried to login with our user and pass and it keeps saying "
System cannot log you on. Check your user and domain, then re-enter your
password, check CAPS lock, etc.. bla bla bla." I do not have the choice to
change my domain. The log in screen is only User, Password, and a check box
to logon with dial up connection. So do you know what I changed and how I
can get back in there? This really sucks!! Please help if you can. Thanks!

OK, here's what happened: you inherited a computer that was a member of
a domain. Instead of wiping the drive and starting fresh (preferred
practice), you just left it as a domain member. Unfortunately, when you
changed it to a Workgroup computer, you disjoined it from the domain.
There is no possibility of joining it back to the domain any more since
you don't work for that company. But all is not lost!

Boot with NTpasswd and change the local (non-domain) Administrator
account's password to a blank. Then you can log on with that account
and go to the User Accounts applet in Control Panel and fix your
passwords, make local accounts, etc. Here's the link to NTPasswd:

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

Once you get in, make a local account for yourself and copy over the
data from the domain account.
