I've been told that I should NEVER use Outlook Express 6 and use a
non-Microsoft browser because IE6 and OE6 are discontinued. I am running
Windows 2000 Professional so I can't upgrade. I do install security updates
for both applications, use recommended security settings, using Norton
AntiVirus 2005, using the most recent version of ZoneAlarm firewall freeware,
and my computer is sitting behind a roughter firewall. Shouldn't all that be
enough? I like Outlook Express 6 because it's simple and Internet Explorer is
still the most supported browser. I've been told to use Udora(sp?) and
FireFox. FireFox is installed on my system, but it takes a while to load.

It is not correct they are discontinued , your Operating system is a little
bit old (Win 2000) and it is the operating system which support is
discontinued.

Generally Mozilla Firefox is much more secure to use on any computer and
espesially on old computers like your.Although Internet Explorer has always
been my favourite , my choice , I do recommend you Firefox over IE in your
case with this old OS.

A good replacement of Outlook Express is Mozilla Thunderbird . In addition
Thunderbird includes SPAM filter to filter unwanted junky mails .
For more information about Mozilla products , visit http://www.mozilla.com

Something else you mention is Norton AntiVirus 2005 . Version 2005 is very
old but the onliest Norton version that supports Windows 2000 . Norton is not
so good product at all.I strongly recommend you uninstall it in favour of
another better antivirus product. Uninstall Norton from Add/Remove programs
in Control Panel , uninstall everything Symantec (Live Update and other
Symantec stuff) and reboot .
After that download and run Symantec's Norton removal tool to remove all
tracks of Norton which haven't been removed

Choose antivirus that best fit your needs . For paid product I recommend you
ESET NOD32 (www.eset.com) . For free , Avast antivirus Home edition
(www.avast.com)

Actually, I got that info from brother. When it comes to his health or his
computer, he's always been a hypochondriac. I know that Win2kPro is in it's
extended support phase. I don't know if Internet Explorer 6 SP1 or Outlook
Express 6 are still getting the security patches, or if Microsoft totally
junked these softwares in an at-your-own-risk way. Actually, XP uses the
Win2kPro kernal which is why Win2k can run XP software if the software
ignores the OS. If you're running WinXP, beware. WinXP is about ready to hit
the extended support phase. Diliberate obsoletion just makes me mad. I love
Win2kPro, and I don't wan't to give it up, but I do hear the call of Linux
offering a home for my orphaned computer.
