Windows Server 2003. I have a folder that is shared (or sharable) by all
users on the network. I want to set up security to prevent people from
deleting files accidentally.
1. How do I set security on the shared folder so that everyone can read,
write, create files and folders?
2. How do I set individual subfolders so that only the owner can delete
files and subfolders?
3. How is an owner of a file established after the fact? I created most of
the subfolders with the administrator logon. How may I assign a different
owner to these subfolders?

If I am approaching this the wrong way, please let me know. Thanks for any
help.

Modify or full control permissions on the main page of the security settings
is needed for a user to delete files. So for objective 1. give the group
read/list/execute/write permissions.

By default you should see creator owner in a parent folder you create and
when you check special permissions it will show that creator owner has full
control for subfolders and file only. That should take care of objective 2.

To assign ownership for a folder open the properties of the folder and go to
security/advanced/owner - change owner. You can add users that are not in
the current list to choose from. Assigning ownership via the GUI is new to
Windows 2003 and you will not see such on Windows 2000 or XP Pro.

When tweaking folder permissions keep in mind that in the advanced page for
special permissions a user or group can be listed more than one which gives
you tremendous flexibility to assign permissions. For instance you could
have a group listed with permissions for folder and subfolders only and then
again for files only which is configured via the "apply onto" option
