If you were Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
I was trying the add a password for one file I have in My Documents folder.
I right clicked the Properties tab & then the Sharing tab. I get the window
that says, check this box to prevent others from access folder (or something
like that), and I then I hit apply. A new window states I have no password,
& I create one. Now, my desktop won't open without the password I created
(just for the one file, I thought). My wife & kids can't use the computer
w/o te password, and I can still open the folder I was trying to secure & no
password is required. Please help. Thanks, M

You cannot secure a single file using a password like you want, this is what
accounts are for.
You need to create seperate login accounts, one for you and one for your
wife and children (presumably).
Then use the 'security' tab (presuming pro) to set the access rights to that
file just to your account.
Alternativly, use a password protected ZIP folder to store your explicit
materials; its not h4x0r proof, but then again its doubtful your wife and
daughter are hackers.

I'm presuming you're using Windows XP ? It's critical to mention your OS
version, etc., when posting in here...including whether it's Home or Pro.
There is no native way to password protect your files. All user accounts
should have passwords, and you should use NTFS security to control access to
them, which is a LOT better than password protection anyway. That's sort of
what you've done already. Don't grant admin access to any account you don't
wish to...in fact, your own account shouldn't be a local admin either.

If you were Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options When you went to "password protect" that file you selected to make
the profile storage area of the account you were using private to only
that account. The system was smart enough to see that the account
did not have a password and so asked that you set one - for the
account, since making the profile storage private is pretty useless if
anyone can walk up to the machine and log in with the account.
As soon a there are two accounts or a password on the one, then
login changes in XP (as you do now have a password, as you
should).
Does that explain the sequence you experienced ??
So, now just define accounts for your wife and for your kid,
giving them each their own with unique passwords. What is
stored in your private profile is not accessible to the other accounts
as long as they are limited, not admin, accounts.
Try the Help system for info on defining and using accounts.
