Hi I have a serious problem that I believe may be some form of identity
theft and breach of security.

I have been informed by a few people that I know that they have
received emails, allegedly from me, which usually have the following
traits:

1. they are from my Hotmail account and name, although the name on
these emails has only my first initial instead of my full name that all
my email accounts and client are set to

2. they are usually blank, but one or two reports that they had
attachments

3. the subject line includes the phrase "Not read:" and is often
followed by subject line text that had been in previous emails between
myself and them.

I am using a Mac with Microsoft Entourage as my primary email client. I
have run both Norton Antivirus and MacScan and have found NO viruses,
spyware or keyloggers. I have turned on OS X's firewall and I
frequently clear all my browser caches and cookies. I have changed my
Hotmail/MSN password. So far, this did not solve the problem.

I do not use forwards nor multiple-address emails, and my contacts have
zero connection to each other except through me. They do not receive
emails from each other nor have each other as contacts. The only
connection is through me. Does someone have access to my address and
contacts somehow? This is very worrisome, your help is greatly
appreciated... I have not received any response from Microsoft Security
and this is very frustrating... I am worried someone can do some real
damage.

This appears to be the classic signs of a virus at work - possibly one
of the recent "Worm" virus. They have been known to infiltrate
address book (usually Outlook) and spoofing itself out to users
as "you". There is usually a attachment of some sort also. NEVER
open any of these attachments if you're not sure who is from.
Even if you know this person, scan the file before you download the
attachment. I recommend you get yourself a Anti-Virus program like
McAffee or Norton Anti-virus.

If you're still concerned about your hotmail account, change
your password immediately.

There are lots of articles about e-mail spoofing. Here is one of them.

Here's another good article.

http://www.bhsbees.com/virus_info1.htm

I should have read down a little further in your posting about
having anti-virus SW. Some other person you know who has
your e-mail and does not have anti-virus SW could have been
responsible for creating those e-mails.

First ,check your computer for malware using a software that supports Mac.
Please ,leave Norton -it is ^junk^ and if you are infected it might not
indicate it.
McAfee ,Sophos and Norton support Mac as far as I know.

Then ,you when you are sure you are clean of all kind of threats, goto your
account and :

1.Change your Password
Make it stronger .Use numbers, letters, and special character such as @ # _ -
* .....

2.Change your security question and answer you are asked if you lose/forget
your password.Make them stronger using numbers ,letter and special character.

3.Contact MSN/Hotmail and inform them so they'll keep in mind.
