A firewall [as far as computer networking is concerned] is a device or
software [well even a device uses software] that manages network traffic
based on rules for IP address, protocol [TCP, UDP, ICMP, etc], port, whether
connection is established or not, and even application for software
firewalls. Some very advanced firewalls such as Microsoft ISA 2004 can do
deep application filtering reading headers, etc of http traffic. To be most
effective a firewall needs to be configured to allow only authorized network
traffic in or out of the network. However for most home users a firewall
[such as Windows Firewall or an internet router] usually just denies traffic
into the network that is not established which means that it is not in
response to traffic that was initiated by your computer known to you or not
and is very effective at preventing attackers form the internet or worms
