New to the group, I just read the thread about whether or not to use
Microsoft's or McAfee's firewall and was surprised to see people recomment
Windows. I just had to reformat and resintall my software and when I
installed my MSN Premium and wanted to install the firewall, I got
redirected to McAfee for installation of theirs which made me guess that
they're writing the Windows version or will be.

As my system has some problem with McAfee and I ended up having to stop
installing programs, start over and install Zone Alarm instead BUT I really
preferred what I'll call "the old Windows Firewall."

My question then is, did I make some sort of mistake and inadvertantly get
myself redirected to McAfee and/or is it still possible to install the
Microsoft one?

Thanks
Tim

Hi,

I am not sure if I understand your question correctly.

If you are running Windows XP (SP2) you can go to Control Panel click on
Windows Firewall Icon. Here, make sure that you have "On" selected under
General tab with "Don't allow exceptions" (whenever possible). There are no
additional installations required.

My reply is mixed with your words:

seems to be just an advertisement

No , they are not writing MS Firewall's code

What do you mean "start over" . Didi you fully formated and reinstall your
Windows ? The old Windows Firewall ... yes , it was made in 2004 but if you
update your Windows , it will be also up-to-date .

Yes , you are still possible to use your Windows Firewall . You don't have
to install it . Windows XP Firewall is a part of the operating system and by
default , it is ON and the service called Windows Firewall is by default
started automatically .

Do the following :

Make sure you have uninstall any thirty party firewalls.
Start-Setting-Control Panel -Administratinve tools -Services
Find Windows Firewall . Do NOT touch it , just make sure it is "Started" and
"Automatic" . Close.
Then , Control Panel -> Windows Firewall -> ON + check "Don't allow
exceptions"

Yes, with each new installation the system got slower and slower and I
realized that something REALLY negative was taking place so, as I was fairly
near the beginning of the process, I decided that rather than remove McAfee
and not know what files etc are still actually on my system and, maybe even
running, I'd just format again and restart a second time.

Thanks so much. I followed your instructions and now have the ZA removed
and the Microsoft one fully operational. I guess it had just been so long
since I'd done a reformat etc that I'd forgotten how I came to have the
firewall and was thinking it was part of my MSN Premium as opposed to the
basic Windows XP. Anyway, problem solved now...thanks again.
