I can't turn on my firewall. It is "greyed out". A PC company worked on it
and said I don't need it anyway. I would like to have it running.

Hi there Qwerty,
I'm assuming that you are talking about Windows Firewall. By
chance, do you have either Norton's Internet Security or McAfee's
Internet Security installed? (These would be a combination of
Anti-virus and firewall.)
If you do, then you don't need to worry about Windows Firewall. One
way to tell if you have either of them installed (or another firewall
for that matter) is to go into the Security Center (Start Menu ---->
Control Panel ---> Security Center) and see whether "Firewall" is set to
"on" or "I have a firewall that I will monitor myself."
Another way to tell if you have a 'third party' firewall is in the
lower right hand corner of your screen where the icons are (the
systray), you'll have one that should pop up <brandname> Firewall or
something to that effect when you put your cursor over it.
If you have another firewall running, then you're protected.
Contrary to what people would tend to think, having two or more
firewalls is not good. They may conflict with each other, and cause you
more problems then they're worth. So, if you have a firewall running
already, then you don't want/need Windows Firewall running as well.
However, if you don't have another firewall running, we need to dig
into this further. Something is preventing Windows Firewall from
starting up. Personally, I would recommend in this case, that you get a
third party firewall anyhow. Symantec (Norton's Personal Firewall),
McAfee (McAfee's Personal Firewall/Internet Security), Trend-Micro
(PC-Cillin Internet Security), Panda Security are all fairly good for
major manufacturers. Also, there are free and trial (limited) versions
of firewalls by Zone Alarm, Kerio (Sunbelt), Tiny, Outpost (Agmitum) and
others.
HTH and if you end up needing links for some of the above mentioned
firewalls (or others) let us know. Also, if this doesn't (or does) help
you out, please let us know as well.

If you were Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options Then ask the PC Company why they believe you don't need it. Don't
automatically assume they are wrong,...they may be right.
I never run the Windows Firewall because I am always behind a NAT-Based
Firewall.
