I have recently set up a network at home with a Desk and Laptop. Specific aim
was to be able to share files fully (i.e. eidt
/modify save) on my desktop with my laptop. Laptop has small hd so don't
want to hold the info there. Can see both computers and files in my network
places but when I open a desktop resident file on the laptop it allows read
only. If I go back to the Desktop and try to give permissions to users on the
laptop, I can't because when browsing locations the Desktop only shows itself
as a location. I.e. it cannot see the laptop and therefore I can't change
permissions. Can someone help? Also I find strage that the two printers I
have set up shares to the latop come up as 'Auto' when I look at them - what
does that mean?

You haven't told us what operating systems the two machines are running.
Because you mention "Auto" for the printers on the laptop, I assume
you've got some version of XP - Home or Pro. To answer that second
question first, you've got the laptop set to automatically find
printers and it has found the ones available. This saves you the
trouble of installing the printers on the laptop. Can you successfully
print to both printers from the laptop?

If you have XP on both machines, run the Network Setup Wizard on both
computers. This is often enough to fix network problems. Also, you may
have a misconfigured firewall on either (or both) computers. Make sure
that 1) you only have one firewall running on each machine; 2) and that
the firewall is configured to allow the lan as trusted.

Try logging onto the laptop itself to change permissions. The link below may
help explain more about folder and file permissions.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308418

Generally it is not a good idea to share the desktop. Instead create a
folder on your computer and give it the permissions you want for ntfs and
for the share itself. Configuring share permissions vary depending on the
operating system and XP Home can use only simple file sharing. Keep in mind
that Windows Firewall or any other host firewall can block access to other
computers on your network if enabled though you should be able to configure
exceptions or define your trusted network. Some personal firewalls will
block netbios over tcp/ip on your subnet which will keep computers from
showing in my network places until you allow it for your trusted network. If
you know the computer and share name you should still be able to access it
via UNC by entering in the run box of the client computer
\computername\sharename . You could also substitute the IP address of the
computer with the share if using the computer name does not work because of
failure of computer name resolution. The links below may also help. ---
