When I wipe the hard drives of any of my three computers, then go directly to
the Windows Update site, the ActiveX security certificate has an expired date
-- always, 10-14-05. MS Software engineers spent three different afternoons
trying to resolve this using desktop software, so I know this is not a
"normal" situation.

After this, I was kicked back to a lower-level MS tech who told me this was,
indeed, normal, and sent me an e-mail saying MS could not offer further
support on this. When I asked for this in writing, she replied that I would
have to get that from Microsoft Legal.

I have requested a response from Microsoft Legal by fax at least three
times, over the past four months, and I have not received a response. Can you
help?

We are not Microsoft.

Microsoft does not run these groups, they only provide the server to host them
and provide a web interface to post messages in them. You could do the same
"anonymously" with an NNTP Newsreader and not involve MS at all.

The groups are "public", they are unmoderated,...basically it is a
"free-for-all", or "every-man-for-himself, or ..."the wild-wild-west".

I have installed many OSs and then went to MS Update and have never had trouble
from a clean install. I never noticed if a date on an activex control was
expired, but I probably would not really look that close and probably would care
if I did notice. It doesn't really mean that much to me.

The following is my take on the situation,...although I could be wrong,....

I doubt MS would give you anything in writing saying that they couldn't help you
unless they charged you money. However they do not charge people for support if
they cannot solve the problem. So you would not have been charged, so there is
no further obligation for them.

Just because the tech told you to contact MS Legal for that does not mean that
was the correct thing to tell you, and does not mean that MS Legal would do that
for anyone. Since you would not have been charged, MS Legal, of all people,
would know they have no obligation to give you anything in writing unless they
simply chose to do so out of courteousy.

Philip,

Thanks for your reply. I understand that "we are not Microsoft." I
appreciate the service that you and so many others provide.

For what it's worth, a MS rep *did* say in writing that, after literally
hundreds of hours of support in this case, that they could offer no further
support. They also sent me a retail copy of XP Pro, which of course did
nothing to fix this problem.

I really appreciate your help and support on this and other matters.
