Can anyone tell me why Excel (2002) has just recently started to try to
contact akamai.com every time I start it (Excel) up (I know this because my
Firewall intercepts the attempt) and how I can stop it from doing so

Hello . I would suggest you check your computer for malicious software first
and after you make sure you are clean , post your request into the specific
Excel newsgroup Microsoft has created

Perform the instructions in my site and remove viruses and spyware :
http://pandaman.my.contact.bg

Post in the Excel's newsgroup >>>

HTTP:

Since I don't have MS Excel I can't help you more , sorry ! :)

akamai.com is a service that companies (including Microsoft) use to host
high-traffic sites.

Excel may be checking for updates or for online help. See if you have those
features turned on.
