(Easy Start Button)I notice a green button icon "ESB" on my desktop taskbar.
Despite exiting and using uninstall via the Start/Programs menu it
re-installs itself at re-boot, so I assume there are registry entries I need
to remove to clean my PC (running Windows XP).

Can you tell me, step-by-step, how to remove the relevant registry entries
(or is there a program, preferably shareware/freeware that will do it
automatically?

Many thanks!

I Googled "Easy Start Button" and apparently this is software that
provides functionality for extra keys on certain laptops. So it must
have been preinstalled by your laptop mftr. If you don't use the extra
keys, just disable it at start up with the System Configuration
Utility.

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab
and find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply
and OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time
you do you'll get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick
the box that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".
