Hi, I've got a folder on the server that has a bunch of folders and files
that were created by a former employee who just recently left the company.
The CEO has asked me to give him permission to modify these files as he and
everyone else can only access them in "read-only" mode. If I right-click on
the files, the read-only option is UNCHECKED. They are all indicated as the
previous employee as far as Ownership. I can login to the server under the
admin account.
A couple of them are password protected and I'm hoping that we'll be able to
call her for that information.
What do I need to do in order to give others modify access to these files
and folders?

thanks much,

rs

The "Read Only" you see on the file is an "attribute" and has nothing to do
with NTFS file permissions.Take ownersgip as the Administrator and re-apply
your folder/file permissions.

First, you should take ownership of files and folders:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421

Second, when all of the files and folders of the former employee are yours,
you should give the modify (if I understood you correctly) permission to the
CEO and everyone else.
Right click on the top level folder of former employee ->security tab -> add
Everyone group (or whatever) -> check Modify permission -> apply -> click on
advanced button -> check Replace permission entries...blah, blah (this will
replace permissions on all child objects) -> apply -> ok and that's it.
