Do ANTIVIR and SPY SWEEPER clash ? Ian_H 06-14-2006

Hi, I am a bit out of my depth here so I could do with some general advice
from one of your gurus about virus and spyware protection.
1), Last week I tried a basic virus protection program -- E. accelerator
Stop Sign -- but within a few days it allowed through, (but reported), the
infection as follows
"C:\program files\orange\setup\orangesearch.exe:uninstall.exe is infected
with Adware.Xbarre".
I deleted the containing folder and uninstall the orange toolbar. Was this
the correct action?
2) Since then I have an installed Stop Sign and am trying ANTIVIR (free
trial version), for virus protection.
However, I came across a review that suggested that spyware and adware are
not efficiently covered by virus protection programs and that programs such
as SPY SWEEPER are better at this.
My question is would it be advisable to have both ANTIVIR and SPY SWEEPER
active on my computer at the same time -- or would they clash?
If you do not advise having both programs active together, how can one
protect from spyware and adware at the same time as viruses? If there is not
any "all in one " program is there some other sensible compromise that you
could recommend ?
Thanks for your
advice - Ian

I've never used StopSign or AntiVir, but I can offer this advice:

There are very many types of threats on the internet today, including
viruses (of which there are several varieties), spyware, adware, keyloggers,
dialers, hijackers etc. etc. Collectively they are known as 'malware'. You
need protection against all of them. There is no one program that can
adequately protect you against them all, so you need several programs.

These programs operate in one of two ways (for the purpose of this
discussion): they can either be installed on your computer, ready to be
used, or they can be installed and running at all times. You do not want to
have two or more of the same type of program running at the same time. For
example, you musn't have two firewalls running at the same time or two
antivirus programs running at the same time. But it's fine to have one
spyware detector running at all times and another installed on your
computer, ready to scan your hard drive if called upon.

You should not attempt to remove malware on your own. You almost never
succeed and doing so makes it difficult or even impossible for a software
tool to remove the malware. You should always let the software attempt to
remove the malware. If the software can't do it, you should only attempt
manual removal if you are able to find specific removal instructions for the
specific malware on your computer.

Somestimes an infected computer cannot be fixed no matter what you or anyone
tries to do.

The most effective way to protect yourself on the internet is to learn and
adopt safe computing practices. You should not count on software alone to
protect you. Instead, you should focus on not letting the malware infect you
in the first place.

Hello . You can run SpySweeper and AntiVIR at the same time because they do
different things so they shouldn't fight with each other .

I am not a fan of free softwares which means I prefer the paid and better
one however if you decide to keep the free one , you can use Ad-Aware se
Personal and Spybot s&d to scan your computer on regular bases .
