See this KB article which has many suggestions & tips:

How to troubleshoot definition update issues for Windows Defender:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918355

Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender support
and comments. This is not one of them.

Hi Jeff,

Please understand we do not support Windows Defender in newsgroup. As far
as I know, there is no online or e-mail support for Windows Defender. If
you want to seek personal and professional level technical support for
Windows Defender, you may contact the PC Safety Line at (866) PC-SAFETY or
(866) 727-2338.

In addition, you may also post to the following newsgroup:
/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.private.security.spyware.general&lang=en&cr=US&r=
33d293cc-19b6-404b-865b-565a73822c7f>

This is a more appropriate forum for your question where you will get the
most qualified pool of respondents and other partners in the newsgroups who
can either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us.

Um..., what is microsoft.private.security.spyware.general if not a
newsgroup? Perhaps you meant to say "in this/the public newsgroup".

BTW, in all MS newsgroups it's customary to quote the previous message in
your replies. Thank you.

Hi,

IĄŻm sorry I didnĄŻt make myself clear. HereĄŻs the newsgroup for Windows
Defender:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/support/newsgroups/default.mspx?dg=
microsoft.public.security.homeusers&lang=en&cr=US

Since I donĄŻt reply to posts by Outlook Express or by IE, the previous
message wonĄŻt be quoted in my reply. Sorry for the inconvenience.
