Does the machine where you are testing this have the same DNS domain
as the server on which the domain DFS root was defined?
Such prompting usually means that the origin machine is not being
recognized as being in the local zone (as defined in IE). Since the
direct share has no such issue but when accessed via a referral by
DFS it seems to indicate the server hosting the DFS root is the one
not seen as in the local zone.
