If I tried clicking on a link, say in Yahoo or Gmail I kept getting a
micosoft internet explorer popup from "DATABASE GRATIS - www.sesso.be"

see here...

I ran spybot and it found nothing. I cleared the temporary internet
files, I deleted all offline content, I rebooted the computer. Finally
I had to go back a couple days and did a system restore.

So I'm wondering. Could I have deleted this crap some other way?
Can I block this from reacurring again?

I wish I could kill these type of popups but NoAds calls them all
"Microsoft Internet Explorer". Kill THAT and the browser won't even
load!

If you are using XP you should consider upgrading to SP2 if you are not
using it already. Yes there is some inconvenience with the pop messages that
IE generated but these are for your protection and you can eliminate a lot
of that by adding websites you know to be secure to the trusted Web Content
Zone. Without knowing exactly what happen to you it is hard to say what the
fix would be. You may also want to try to use Microsoft Anti-Spyware and
also try running your malware or spyware tools in Safe Mode and be sure you
are using the latest definitions for such.

I checked out the link and what I will advise is to be very careful when
selecting an option in a pop up box from a web page. In many cases cancel
will actually be an OK if you look at the wording and can allow something to
be installed. I never select an option from a webpage such as that, What I
do is use the red X at the top of the page to close the page. If you can not
seem to find an exit option then close Internet Explorer. You can open Task
Manager, select processes, select instances of iexplore.exe, right click and
select end process tree. --- Steve
