If you were  Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
As the subject already asked: Do I always need an IPSec server to establish an
IPsec connection
or is something like an ad-hoc (similar to WLAN) IP-sec connection between two
clients possible?

What you are describing is IPSec transport mode, and this is possible
between any two clients that support IPSec. You must define the
protocols that will require IPSec (connections to TCP port 23 for
example) on both ends (client and server), an authentication method
(certs, kerberos, or shared secret), and what protection is required
(AH, ESP and algorithms)
