I have several Win2000 server & WinXP nodes on protected networks that cannot
use Windows Update over the network. Can I manually apply multiple security
updates to these machines without restarting between updates? For example,
can I apply the updates for all of 2005, ms05-001 - ms05-055, consecutively
and then restart the machine after the last one?

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

I have with no ill effects. So, well, I would say yes. It's worked fine here
but that doesn't mean you're fated to the same results. I've done whole
bunches of updates to newly installed PCs and then finally rebooted when I
was all done with them. I can say that it's not best practice, surely, but
that it worked just fine on those PCs, with those updates, with those
configurations, and that those suffered no ill effects and the updates were
installed completely and functioned properly. <g>

Starting sometime before last year updates were issued with
improved update.exe installer that does take care of the patch
binary ordering when multiples are installed.
If you are including quite old patches (circa 02 thru mid 03)
then all bets are off and you should then use the qchain.exe
ordering tool prior to the one reboot.
If you read into the bulletins they will provide you with the
syntax for silent installation. With this one can make a small
bat file that applies all of your set of patches with one click
and one reboot.
