If you were  Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options

I would like to know if Windows XP and Vista clients can connect to a
non-Microsoft Samba server with a blank password. The server holds the users
in LDAP.

This document indicates that the users cannot log in as network users in
that case:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457059.aspx#ECAA

However I do not know if that applies to mapping drives as well.

You should be able to log on to the Samba resource with blank password -
the restriction you're referring to is for network access _to_ Windows.
