My company is purchasing MS Small Business server 2003. We want to set up
Exchange for internal and internet email. We have a Norton appliance, I
forget the specific model, for our firewall.

My question is: What's the most basic but effective network configuration
for security? Ie, no DMZ? SB server in DMZ? SB server on main network and
gateway/forwarder in DMZ?

We have virtually no money to spend beyond the SB server setup itself.

Thanks for the help.

You may want to post in one of the SBS newsgroups to see what they advise
over there and also post other questions that you may have as you set up
your network. In my opinion it makes no sense to put your SBS server in a
DMZ. Just use the firewall to protect it and you will have to open the
proper ports on the firewall so that your email works which usually is port
25 TCP for SMTP. Also be sure to check out the link below on tips from
Microsoft to protect your network and data for small businesses that is
written in very understandable terms compared to a lot of security books. Be
sure to have a backup strategy also and remember that weak passwords are the
number one threat to network/data security followed by not physically
securing computers that have sensitive data.. --- Steve
