Windows XP Professional SP2, if I have the automatic updates turned on, when
the yellow shield is in the system tray it freezes up taskbar, windows
desktop and can't get into task manager. Get same problem on a number of PCs.
Any help would be great.

Svchost/Wuauserv high CPU use (from MVP PA Bear)

Try deleting the contents of this folder (or the folder itself) & reboot:

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore

If no joy, try deleting the contents of this folder (or the folder
itself) & reboot:

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution

Also see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

Workaround: Change the default from Microsoft Update to Windows Update:
Go to Microsoft Update > Click on Change Settings in left pane > Scroll
to bottom of page > To Stop Using Microsoft Update > Disable Microsoft
Update software and let me use Windows Update only (check).

When I use the Microsoft Update Site I get this error message:

Error number: 0XDDD0009

I have tried what it suggested on that page and I have also downloaded and
installed the Windows Installer 3.1 v2. But I still get the same error number
coming up.

When it screws up with the browser I try using the Automatic Updates and
configure it for next closet time to the current. After it catches up the
updates, sometimes the browse side of it starts working again.

Apparently, not. We'll be able to tell if you post back with another
unrelated method of resolution.
