If you were  Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
Is there a danger opening WMV files in XP?

I sem to recall something about being taken to dangerous web sites or
getting unwanted code on my system or something like that.

I am running XP Pro/SP2.

Well, unless I'm mistaken, even a fully patched WMP can allow a WMV file to
redirect your computer to a malicious site, correct? You just have to click
an extra mouse click or two to get there, something the user may do if
interested enough in the content.

I'd say that all of Windows should be fully patched to reduce the risk, not
just WMP. Even then, there is always at least some small amount of risk,
for example if in the future an unpatched WMP vulnerability is discovered.
But then using a computer almost always involves accepting at least a little
risk.
