If you were  Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
What is recommended: install an antivirus program on the server or on each
client individually?
Setup: W2K Server, XP clients, MS Exchange.

Both. On the server and each individual client.

Antivirus on the clients is a must. Antivirus on the servers is often done
in addition for extra protection, but it is not always a must.

I would certainly scan the clients and have an Exchange aware AV scanning
the mailbox stores on my Exchange server.

Oh yes. Do *not* let a normal file-based scanner scan exchange server
components, unless you're actually *trying* to test your exchange disaster
recovery procedures.
