I have a icon, red circle with a red slash & a blue circle with a question
mark. Every minute or so a pop up message telling me my computer is infected
and to click here to get the software to stop this. It directs me to a site
to buy the software. Is there anyway of getting rid of this pop up and
avoiding buying un-needed software?

Sounds like ad-ware. You can google for Spybot Search and Destroy or
Ad-Aware, which are free [Ad-Aware is only free for personal, non-business
use]. If you choose Spybot, be sure to click the "Immunize" button during
setup.

If that doesn't remove it, there are a variety of other free things you can
try.

The first thing you should do is to goto Control Panel -> Add/Remove
programs and remove 'Java RE' entries with the Remove button .

Then , please see this thread:
http://groups.google.bg/group/microsoft.public.security.homeusers/browse_thread/thread/5eb2ca7d15c5e74d/a9dac4de8d0e2a91?lnk=st&q=&rnum=1&hl=bg#a9dac4de8d0e2a91

And yes , *NEVER buy such a crap* , this is cheating and will infect your PC
even more

Good luck
