My charming Dell crashed, but I was able to save the hard drive, which now
sits in a USB-connected enclosure, so I can access the files from another
computer. But...

I cannot get access to the files/folders under my (old) log-in name,
presumably because it was originally protected with a password as part of my
Windows XP login. (I'm talking about files in "Documents & Settings" under
my specific user name.)

Is there a way to get around this, or to provide the password to get into
this section of the harddrive? There are a bunch of profile-type data files
that are very much worth salvaging. And Dell has not been much help with all
this, needless to say.

First try taking ownership of the files.
Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP [Q308421] -
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421

If that doesn't work, you can always retrieve the files with Knoppix, a
Linux distro that runs from CD. Knoppix will ignore XP permissions and
you can get the files and then just copy them to your new hard drive.
Let me know if you need more help on that.
