If you were  Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
System was in infected so I ran anti-virus. Anti-virus didn't work and cpu
shuts down with a loud beep on reboot. virus alert came from windows/system32
. Has anyone suffered the same?

This is the ContraVirus. See if you can get into Safe Mode and then
follow the removal instructions:

To get into Safe Mode, repeatedly tap the F8 key as the computer is
starting up. This will get you to the right menu where you will use your
arrow keys to choose Safe Mode.

But what effect with this have on the shutdown-reboot? It would seem there
is more than just the ContraVirus false alert on hand.

I don't know, Phil and like you I wondered about it. That's why I wanted
to see if the OP could get into Safe Mode or if s/he has some other
hardware issues. I was just trying to narrow down the troubleshooting.

Add to such:

FOR DIRECT ASSISTANCE call Microsoft Security Hotline
866 727 2338

On normal mode
go to task manager CTRL+DEL
go to process TAB
end process for explorer.exe
now locate on this same list xpuupdate.exe and end process for it
now click in the button new task
browse to C:\windows\system32\locate now xpuupdate.exe and delete it

then browse again to C:\Program Files\ locate Contra Virus Folder and Delete
it
now sweep the system by using AVG Antispyware
