Not sure if this forum is the place to discuss specific malware but - I just
installed WD in hopes of removing the 'starware toolbar' hijack and was
disappointed to see that WD left it untouched. Anyone have anything to say on
this?

You've come to the right place, any malware problems are welcome here. To
begin with, Windows Defender is a BETA or a program in testing (panda_man's
excellent way of remembering this is:
Bugs
Exist
Try
Another) Since Windows Defender is a beta, it is a piece of junk compared to
all of the other anti-spyware products out there. Please go to the Fast
Malware Removal page (Or the Comprehensive Malware Removal Instructions on
the Detailed Malware Removal page for a much mroe in-depth cleaning if you
have the time) on my website: www.stopmalware.tk once you've cleaned the
majority of malware by following the instructions provided on my website, go
to Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs/and remove Windows Defender
from your system. Then go to the Safety Tips page on my website to secure
your computer from moderate-severe malware infection.

**Note**
The following will help myself and others diagonis your situation and
provide an accurate solution; in my reply I'm assuming you have a Windows XP
operating system.
1. What operating system and service pack are you using?
2. What anti-virus program do you have?
3. What anti-spyware programs do you have?

Um, now wait a minute. I realize it's Beta. But isn't this the same thing
that's been out there for well over a year as "Windows AntiSpyware?" I
thought this was actually a pretty refined product by now.

No, the one that used to be out was called Microsoft Anti-Spyware. If you
still have MSAS on your computer or remember what it looked like they are
completely different. The MSAS icon used to be a red and yellow target sign
with a red and yellow interface. Windows Defender's icon is a stone wall and
its interface is that of a classical windows color scheme. MSAS was
originally owned by the GIANT software company but then Microsoft bought it.
In my opinion MSAS was and is much better than the new Windows Defender. For
you see, Microsoft decided to discontinue the MSAS program and build one of
their own; so, now I arrive at my conclusion and the answer to your
question: Windows Defender is not actually old but new because Microsoft
started a completely new anti-spyware program, and the "old" one was
Microsoft AntiSpyware GIANT.

Yeah I meant to say MSAS. So that 'product' was completely abandoned and WD
is new code? Why on earth did they do that?

I've had MSAS on my own PC for over a year - the problem with starware is on
my wife's PC. When people ask me about their spyware problems I've been
telling them to download WD, thinking it was just a new name for MSAS. So I
installed WD on my wife's PC today and was amazed that it didn't even
recognize starware.

Obviously I've been telling people the wrong thing. Very disappointing and
it appears I'm right back where I was a year ago, web-searrching for 3rd
party tools to maintain the MS platform.
