If you open Outlook, and make sure you are looking at *that* PST file, do
you see the messages/attachments in question?

I don't subscribe the the newsgroup in which you posted that message - have
you got any useful replies in there? I'd have posted it in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general (as help & support is not the best group;
it deals with issues pertaining to XP's Help and Support feature).
If you don't have any luck and your machine is pretty well useless at the
moment, you might back up *all* your data (including *.pst - which you may
need to search for including hidden/system folders) to another hard drive,
etc., and reformat/reinstall XP from scratch.
I'm not a huge fan of eTrust. For standalone machines, I'm fond of Trend
PCCillin. Your mileage may vary.
