I have opened an email that may have contained a virus but can you get
viruses from just opening an e-mail only? I am scanning my computer with
Ad-Aware SE, Windows Defender (beta 2) and Norton Antivirus 2004, do you
think I have done enough to make sure my computer is not infected by
anything? nothing strange has happened so since I opened the e-mail.
If you could answer the two questions that would be great thanks.

How did you know the email contained a virus ? Did Norton alert you to this
event ?
If so, it was Norton was armed against it, and should have dealt with it.
A real-time spy/mal-ware scanner such as Ewido http://www.ewido.net/en/ would compliment your "layers" of security.
A hosts file will help
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Adaware, if you pay for it, will provide a real-time scanner so as to trap
spy/malware before it gets into your machine. i.e. better to catch it
first, rather than scan for it and try to remove it after it's in there !

It depends.
Ad-Aware SE, Windows Defender (beta 2) will nOT work with email, only Norton AV.
If the email body of the email uses exploit code and your PC is un-patched then
thhe virus
bearing attachment could be executed.
This will also depend on your email client.
