I assume you are referring to those external hard disk drives.
If you open the case (not the hard disk), the warranty will be void, as the
sticker will also be torn in the process. No self-destruction there. But you
should be able to replace to another hard disk if that is your intention to
do so.
But, if you open the hard disk itself (the 'thing' inside the case), you
will cause damage as they are very sensitive to the environment.
