Are any of these adequate? My norton is so resource heavy and when it does
find a threat, it does not know what to do and the info on their site is so
vague. I am tired of paying for this. Can I uninstall it and get something
free?

I have been using AVAST and am pleased with the free
version. My McAfee wants money for updated virus
signatures and I have not been pleased with the way it
updates, being very slow.

Free antiviruses:
AVG (free.grisoft.com)
Avast (www.avast.com)

both have low detection rate !

If you wish software low on resourses with good detection rate , Nod32 is
welcome to come into your computer:
http://www.eset.com

Get a free 30 day trial version before you buy

I have tested Norton many times and it is low on old computers but cannot be
so low as you say on new computers.I am also not Symantec's fan but the truth
is that you may wish also to buy more RAM .

Avast says free trial only. If I use AVG am I safe uninstalling norton?

Norton has about 10 services running all the time. This seems way over kill.
